The Next-Generation Wireless Networking (NWN) Lab at Al-Khawrizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS) is dedicated to research and development in wireless sensor networks (WSN), Internet of Things (IoT), and software-defined networks (SDN). The lab consists of three PhDs and over 15 full-time research associates and interns. Their work includes creating IEEE 802.15.4/802.11 compliant wireless sensor and camera nodes, designing communication protocols and architecture, and developing various applications. Notable ongoing projects include a citywide acoustic surveillance solution in partnership with Safe City Authority Lahore, a project on “Enabling Green Video Streaming over IoT” to optimize IoT protocols and architecture for low-power multimedia devices, and a “Multimodal Sensing Enabled Real-time Intelligent Wireless Camera Network for Secure Spaces” aimed at improving security at public places in Pakistan using event-driven systems and sensor integration. Additionally, they are working on projects like “VISTA” for cumulative vision of mobile objects and “Ambient Air Quality Monitoring” through integrated wireless sensor and vehicular networks. These initiatives showcase the lab’s commitment to advancing wireless networking technologies for various applications.
